Christie Sommers is the founder of West Oak Design. She was drawn to clothing design out of a personal need for comfortable garments that fit a simple classic aesthetic. While studying Ballet and Modern dance in college, she found herself in front of a sewing machine in a costume design course and has been making her own clothing since. Having always been a creative person, she delved deeply into a variety of art forms including mural arts, furniture design and construction, weaving, knitting, jewelry, and architectural sketching/rendering. While obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, she explored the notion of utilizing the principals Biomimicry as a holistic model for business and design. Those studies led her to a deep respect for nature and are the core foundation of her sustainable business practices.
West Oak Design is the direct result of the #handmadetodayproject, a 365 project in which Christie handmade one thing every day for one year, documenting each day’s creation on her Instagram feed. The project became an incredibly successful marketing tool which led to an online shop, a loyal customer base, and excellent exposure leading to high profile clients such as Whole Foods Market and West Elm.

Mission Statement: West Oak Design offers small batch and one of a kind goods for women and home. Each piece is sustainably handcrafted by Christie Sommers in her Wyndmoor, PA studio. In attempt to lessen environmental impact, materials are purchased locally or online through small American businesses. A low to no waste approach is taken to all designs. Material remaining after the construction of a dress may become a top. Remnants from the making of a top may become a clutch or wall mount planter. Meticulously sewn clothing, bags, and housewares blend seamlessly in the West Oak Design aesthetic.
